executive MBA or an expensive wardrobe to get ahead?

If you
want to invest in your career, do you choose an exorbitantly priced
executive MBA or an expensive wardrobe and a personal trainer?
The latter option sounds ludicrous unless you've been following the
media storm over the new book Honey Money: The Power of Erotic Capital
by Catherine Hakim, a sociologist at the London School of Economics.
In the book, Ms. Hakim argues that “erotic capital,” which
she defines as the “combination of beauty, sex appeal, skills
of self-presentation and social skills” is as valuable as education
and social networks when it comes to economic gains. This mix of physical
and social attributes presumably makes women and men the types of colleagues
you want to spend the bulk of your waking hours with.
While naturally beautiful and socially astute women and men hold an
advantage, Ms. Hakim notes that anyone can increase their erotic capital.
Boosting your appeal can be as simple as smiling or it can include dieting,
personal trainers, fashion and even plastic surgery. Although erotic
capital can be used by men and women alike, Ms. Hakim feels that women
have a longer tradition of developing and exploiting it.

Lagarde must rank on anyone's list of the world's most powerful people.
Named in June to head the International Monetary Fund, she previously
held several cabinet posts in the French government, including finance
minister, making her the first woman to hold that job in a major economy.
Ms. Lagarde possesses an abundance of what I call "erotic capital,"
and she has used it knowingly and to great advantage.
Women in the U.S., Britain and other outposts of the Anglo-Saxon world
tend, by contrast, to resist the idea that their physical appearance
should matter to their professional advancement. In our age of feminism
and meritocracy, women who emphasize their looks are thought to be superficial;
it somehow seems like cheating.
But do we have this all wrong?
Beauty is not limited to supermodels and A-list celebrities. It can
be achieved by wearing flattering styles, getting in shape, improving
posture and putting some effort into choosing clothing and hairstyles.
And erotic capital is not just about physical attractiveness. It also
encompasses personality, charm, liveliness, social energy and the ability
to make people feel at ease and want to know you. It is not about flaunting
your sexuality at the office by showing more cleavage and wearing tight
pants.
